Leaving is the one moment when the hotel's place on a divided highway matters. The gate lets out onto the eastbound carriageway, the direction away from the airport, so the car first runs a few hundred metres east and turns at the next gap in the central reservation to come back west; it adds a minute, no more. From there it is 24 km to Manavgat and then the familiar line west past the Side junction, Serik and Aksu. At 91 km this is one of the longer runs on the Side side of the coast, and the 80 minutes assumes a clear road, so a morning flight means a pickup while it is still dark.

On this route the time goes in Manavgat, where the D400 turns into a town street with traffic lights and a river bridge, and again on the approach to the airport, where traffic for the terminals gathers. Before six in the morning both pass quickly; from mid-morning, and on the busy summer changeover days, the town alone can add noticeably to the drive. Fix the pickup at booking by working back from the time your airline wants you at check-in, adding the 80 minutes and a margin for Manavgat, and pack the evening before, so that at the gate the bags simply go into the boot.

• Wait for the car inside the hotel entrance rather than on the verge of the D400: traffic passes fast out there, and the driver turns in to the gate in any case.
• Settle the bill and hand back anything borrowed the evening before, so that the early morning is only a matter of carrying bags out to the car.
• Give the flight number with the departure booking too; if the airline moves the flight and you tell us, the pickup moves with it.
