Shemall is one of Antalya's own shopping centres, in Fener, on the Lara side of the city rather than out among the resorts, and most of its customers live here. For a visitor that is precisely the point: it is a working city mall, indoors and cooled, and what it sells you is an afternoon out of the sun rather than a sight. It stands 17 km from the terminal, close by this coast's standards, and a quarter of an hour from the parts of Antalya people come to see. Its tenants change from season to season, so go for the building rather than for a shop you read about last year.
The drive from Antalya Airport is 17 km and about 25 minutes, and nearly all of that time is spent at the far end of it. The first stretch is dual carriageway and goes by without incident; then the road becomes city — lights, lane changes, a roundabout or two — and in the late afternoon that is where twenty-five minutes turns into thirty-five. From the resort strip east of the airport the arithmetic is different: a little over an hour from Side, about thirty-five minutes from Belek, close to two hours from Alanya, all of it on the D400 and all of it there and back inside a day.

The honest reason to book this is the weather, not the shopping. Between about one and five in July and August the beach stops being pleasant, and the real choice is a darkened hotel room or a building with air conditioning; this is the second of those, within half an hour of the airport strip. The same holds for the two or three wet days that spring and autumn produce, when a resort with nothing indoors becomes very small very quickly. Coming for the retail alone is a weaker case, because most of what trades here also trades at the centres closer to the terminal.
Two to three hours is what people actually spend, and a fourth hour only appears if there is a film or a long lunch in it. That is short enough for a waiting driver to be the sensible booking from anywhere within an hour, and long enough that from Alanya you should not make the trip at all. Settle the return before you go in, because the thing that reliably goes wrong is finishing at six with full hands, no car, and the city's worst half hour of traffic standing between you and the coast road.
Whatever you buy has to travel, so think about the boot before the till. Bulky items, a suitcase bought to carry everything else, anything in a box: mention it when you book and the right vehicle turns up. If you fly home within a day or two, ask about the tax-free paperwork while you are still at the counter rather than assuming it can be sorted later. As for pairing, this centre is a few minutes' drive from the old town and from the lower Düden falls, where the river drops into the sea at Lara, so the sensible shape of the day is the errand first and something worth looking at afterwards, on the same car.
- Two hours is the real length of a visit here, so give the driver an hour you will keep rather than an optimistic one.
- It is indoors and cooled throughout, which is the whole argument for choosing it over an open-air outlet in the middle of the afternoon.
- Try clothes on before you pay: a second trip across the city to exchange something costs more than the price you saved.
