Antalya and Dalaman serve two different holidays that people regularly book as one. The flight into Antalya was the one available, or the cheap one, or the one the whole family could take — and the villa is at Fethiye, the boat is at Göcek, the hotel is at Ölüdeniz or Sarıgerme, and the flight home leaves from Dalaman. It happens the other way round just as often, and it happens to yacht charters, to walkers finishing the Lycian Way and to anyone whose plans changed mid-holiday. There is no direct flight between the two: the bus version means the Antalya coach station, a change at Fethiye and a local run out to the airport road, and the chain takes longer than the driving.

Two hundred and thirty kilometres, about three hours and five minutes, on the inland road rather than the coast. It leaves the Antalya plain climbing, through the pass behind the city and up onto the plateau at Korkuteli, where the air turns cooler, the fields open out and the pine and cedar forest begins. The road runs west across that high country for a long time before it starts the descent toward Fethiye and the sea, and the last part crosses flat delta farmland into Dalaman. In winter the plateau holds snow and ice long after the coast has turned mild; in summer it is the coolest part of the day.

• The gap between the two flights is what this ride is planned around: three hours of driving plus two terminals sits very differently inside five hours than inside nine, so give both flight numbers and say which end is the tight one.
• The coast road through Kemer, Kaş and Kalkan is far longer and slower than the inland route, so ask for it only if the drive itself is the point and the day is free.
• Comfort stops on the plateau are roadside places rather than motorway services, so have one planned in rather than hunted for at the moment of need.
• Winter belongs to the plateau rather than to the coast: Korkuteli can be under snow while Antalya is mild, so check the conditions before fixing an early departure in January or February.
