This is a booking made by people whose flights do not match their holiday. A charter lands at Antalya and the return leaves from Gazipaşa; or the cheap outbound was into Antalya while the hotel that was actually booked sits east of Alanya, twenty minutes from the other airport. It happens with separately bought one-way tickets, with rescheduled charters, and with families flying in on different days from different cities. The alternatives are poor: a domestic connection means flying back through Istanbul and losing a day, and the bus means a coach as far as Alanya, a wait, and a local ride at the end of it.

One road, the D400, for all 165 kilometres, and about 135 minutes. It runs east from the airport past Aksu and Serik and the Belek turning, then Side and Manavgat, then the long resort strip through Okurcalar, Avsallar and Konaklı to Alanya, by which point most of the distance is behind you. East of Alanya come Mahmutlar and Kargıcak, and then the road climbs onto the cliffs above Demirtaş before dropping into the Gazipaşa plain and turning up to the airport shelf. In midsummer the resort villages and the through-traffic at Alanya are where the time goes; at night the whole run is straightforward.

• Send both flight numbers, the one landing at Antalya and the one leaving Gazipaşa, so the ride is planned around the pair rather than around a clock time.
• Build the 135 minutes into your check-in at the far end and not into your landing time at the near one, because the belt and passport control come first.
• Two and a quarter hours with a full luggage load is a van journey rather than a car one for most families, so give the number of bags as well as the number of seats.
• The D400 is the only road for the whole 165 kilometres, so a closure or an accident has no detour worth taking — the margin has to be built in at the start rather than made up on the way.
