Heading back, the car climbs the short lanes to the D400 and turns west. The first part runs along the open coast road, but the real variable is Manavgat: the highway goes straight through the town, and from mid-morning onwards its traffic lights, delivery vans and buses can add a noticeable delay. Before dawn the town is empty and the whole 83 km fits comfortably into the 70 minutes quoted; for a daytime flight in high summer, build in extra time for the crossing of Manavgat rather than for the highway itself.

Kızılot's beach hotels sit close together at the end of short lanes off the D400, and at night one illuminated sign looks much like the next. Make sure the booking says Elysium Elite Hotel & Spa in full, not Sea Planet or Sultan of Dreams, which are right beside it. If you are leaving very early, settle any bill at reception the evening before, so that at the agreed time you only have to walk out to the main entrance, where the driver will be waiting.

• Allow for the longer distance: 70 minutes of driving plus your airline's check-in requirement, often three hours for international flights in peak season, so for a flight at noon the car should leave Kızılot at about eight in the morning.
• Children's seats and boosters must be requested for the return leg as well; they are fitted before the car leaves.
• The fare is fixed per vehicle when you book, so a slow passage through Manavgat costs minutes, never money.
