The same 33 km needs a different departure time in August than it does in February. In high summer the terminal fills in waves as the charter departures bunch together, and it is the queue for bag drop and security that varies rather than the drive. In winter the same flight can be an hour calmer. So work backwards from the flight: the time you want to be inside the terminal, then roughly 35 minutes of road, then the private driveway out to the gatehouse. Book the car against that sum rather than against the number of kilometres.

Westbound, the light is what people forget. An afternoon departure drives into a low sun for much of the D400, which slows everyone in the stretch where the road bends towards Aksu, and that is also where the changeover traffic is heaviest. The plantation section at the start is the reverse of the arrival: quiet, no shoulder, nowhere to stop. Any last rearranging of bags is therefore better done under the reception canopy than five minutes later, because there is no lay-by to do it in.

• In peak weeks the terminal is the slow part and the road is not, so take your margin at the airport end rather than by shaving the drive.
• There is nowhere to pull in between the gatehouse and the D400, so a forgotten bag means going back to the hotel rather than stopping on the way.
• If you leave on a weekend changeover, ask for the pickup a quarter of an hour earlier than plain arithmetic suggests, because the same stretch of D400 is carrying the week's arrivals the other way.
