The return leg begins in town. From Özal Caddesi the car heads back up the seafront boulevards through Kumköy to the D400, a stretch that is quick before sunrise but fills from mid-morning, when day visitors drive in for the ruins. Once on the highway the car has 65 km of westbound dual carriageway past Serik and Aksu, and outside the August peak the 60 minutes usually hold.

Özal Caddesi is a street of hotels set close together, and in the dark one entrance can look much like the next. The booking should therefore read The Raga Side, Özal Caddesi 21, and the easiest place to wait for the car is the lobby. Guests who have spent the week strolling into the old town often leave with more than they brought, from painted ceramics to a rolled carpet, so recount the luggage on the last evening and let us know if the car needs more room.

• Reckon the pickup backwards from the flight: 60 minutes on the road plus your airline's check-in window, which is longer for summer international departures.
• A late-morning departure meets the day-trip traffic coming into Side, so allow the margin at the town end of the drive rather than on the highway.
• If the last afternoon is spent among the ruins, walk back to the hotel in good time; the car collects from Özal Caddesi, not from among the ruins.
