Going back means crossing the whole city again: east through Konyaaltı, then round the ring roads to the terminal on the far side. Early in the morning the 27 km really do take about 30 minutes. On a weekday rush hour the point where Konyaaltı's traffic feeds into the ring can add a good share of that again, so set the pickup with the time of day in mind and not only the flight time: leaving the hotel at seven is a different trip from leaving at nine.

In summer the beach is the other variable. By late afternoon Akdeniz Bulvarı is busy with cars looking for a place near the sea, and a departure timed for an evening flight should allow for that before it reaches the ring. If checkout comes hours before the car, ask reception to hold the bags so the last afternoon can still be spent by the water.

• On a weekday morning, add a quarter of an hour to the usual margin; the slow part is getting out of Konyaaltı, not the airport road itself.
• If you are moving on to Kemer or Olympos rather than flying home, the same kind of car can take the coast road west; book it as a separate transfer.
• Rinse the sand off and pack the beach things separately the night before, so the cases go into the boot as they are and not repacked at the door.
