Only Kundu sits further from Gazipaşa than this, and it is worth being plain about why anyone books the leg: the flight and the bed do not match. A seasonal charter put you on a small airport east of Alanya while the address is a city 157 km west, and no amount of routing changes that. From the east, Antalya reads differently than it does from its own airport. Everything you pass for two hours — Alanya, Manavgat, Side, the Belek pines — belongs to this bay's holiday economy, and the centre is where it stops being a holiday and becomes daily life.

The day starts well. West of the runway the road climbs and the whole bay opens up below it, which is the last easy thing that happens. After that it is one road the whole way: Mahmutlar, Kestel, Alanya, Manavgat, Serik, and then the eastern approaches of the city, in that order and with nothing to choose between them. Around 2 hours 10 minutes covers the 157 km when traffic behaves. Late in the afternoon the city end adds to that; after midnight the whole coast road runs clean and the centre is quiet when you reach it.

• Treat this as an afternoon rather than a transfer: over two hours of road is a piece of the day, not the hour after landing.
• Say which side of the centre you are going to, because after 157 km the final twenty minutes are set by the address rather than by the road.
• If the city is only a stop on the way west to Kaş or Kalkan, break the journey here rather than pushing on the same evening — 157 km is already a day's driving.
• Flying home from Gazipaşa means the same two hours in reverse plus check-in, and unlike the arrival there is no margin in it: a late start cannot be made up on this road.
