Going back, the 17 km to the terminals are few, but they start in the middle of a working city, and that is what to plan around. On weekday mornings from about seven the central avenues fill with commuters and school runs, and the first kilometres out of Gençlik are the slow ones; once the car reaches the airport road it moves freely. Before dawn the whole run is clear and the 25 minutes holds with ease. A business traveller on a mid-morning flight should allow more than the distance suggests, because the delay sits right at the start of the trip.

The car collects you from the street outside, where it can stop to load but cannot idle for long, so be in the lobby with the bags at the agreed time. When hours separate checkout from an evening flight, the old town is close enough to fill them on foot before the pickup. Give the flight number when you book the return: the hour the car arrives is worked out from it together with you, with your airline's check-in time added on top.

• On a weekday, put the extra margin into the first stretch through the centre; the airport road itself is rarely where the time goes.
